Fuimos un peque\u00f1o grupo de 15 artistas y creo no equivocarme si digo que compartir esos d\u00edas con Stuart Shils fue una experiencia inolvidable para todos nosotros.<br \/>\nEntre mis anotaciones y referencias de entonces apareci\u00f3 la grabaci\u00f3n de las palabras finales de Stuart Shils para cerrar el curso. Al escucharlas de nuevo no pude dejar de pensar que deb\u00eda compartirlas para que otros artistas que no pudieron asistir tuviesen la oportunidad de escucharlas.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00ed que he decidido publicar este discurso final pese a las deficiencias de sonido y ruido ambiente y venciendo mis reparos sobre la improvisada y a veces inexacta traducci\u00f3n que hice entonces. Para los hispano-hablantes, espero que disculp\u00e9is los errores. Me consuela pensar que en conjunto haya podido trasladar el sentido \u00faltimo de las palabras del maestro.<\/p>\n<p>En estas reflexiones finales, las palabras de Shils ya no hablan de t\u00e9cnica pict\u00f3rica\u00a0 ni de color o composici\u00f3n sino de actitud y de lo que significa ser artista.<\/p>\n<p>Termino transcribiendo la cita de Rilke que Stuart Shils desgrana como cierre de su discurso. La traducci\u00f3n que he encontrado me pareci\u00f3 poco afortunada as\u00ed que he hecho la m\u00eda propia intentando respetar el sentido de las palabras del poeta y as\u00ed de paso redimir en parte la apresurada traducci\u00f3n que hice en aquel momento.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cLas labores del arte son de una infinita soledad, y ninguna forma de acercamiento es tan in\u00fatil como la critica. S\u00f3lo el amor puede tocarlas y asirlas y ser justo con ellas. Conf\u00ede siempre en usted y en sus propios sentimientos, frente a todas esas discusiones, glosas o introducciones de ese tipo. Si luego resulta que no est\u00e1 en lo cierto, ya se encargar\u00e1 el natural desarrollo de su vida interna de llevarle finalmente por otros caminos. Permita a sus juicios su propio desarrollo tranquilo y solitario. Como todo progreso, \u00e9ste ha de surgir de la profundidad interior y no puede ser apremiado ni forzado. Todo es gestaci\u00f3n y despu\u00e9s nacimiento. Dejar que cada impresi\u00f3n y cada embri\u00f3n de un sentimiento llegue a su culminaci\u00f3n por si mismo, en la oscuridad, en lo innombrable, inconsciente e inaccesible al propio entendimiento, y con gran humildad y paciencia esperar la hora del nacimiento de una nueva claridad. Esto solamente es lo que significa vivir como un artista: tanto en el entendimiento como en la creaci\u00f3n.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>En esto no cabe medir el tiempo. Un a\u00f1o no importa y diez a\u00f1os no son nada. Ser artista significa: no contar ni numerar sino madurar como el \u00e1rbol que no fuerza su savia, y permanece erguido y confiado bajo las tormentas de la primavera, sin temor a que tras ellas tal vez nunca pueda llegar otro verano. Llega, pero llega s\u00f3lo para aquellos que son pacientes, que permanecen all\u00ed como si ante ellos se extendiera la eternidad, tan despreocupadamente silenciosa y vasta. Lo aprendo cada d\u00eda de mi vida.
